Determination of Environmental Tobacco Smoking in Schoolchildren with Urine Cotinine Measurements

چکیده
Environmental tobacco smoke has been regarded as one of the most important public health issues. It has been estimated that approximately 700 millions of children in the world are exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). In this study parental smoking habits were determined. Then, the relationship between parent-reported estimates of children's exposure to ETS at home and children's urinary cotinine levels ware examined. Urinary cotinine levels were significantly higher in the exposed group than the nonexposed group. This data shows that ETS exposure was prevalent and a combination of a parent-report and biological measures is suggested as the most informative estimate of ETS exposure in children.

Biological matrices for the evaluation of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke during prenatal life and childhood.
The measurement of nicotine and its major metabolites cotinine and trans-3 -hydroxicotinine together with other minor metabolites (e.g., cotinine N-oxide, cotinine, and trans-3 -hydroxicotinine glucuronides) in conventional and nonconventional biological matrices has been used as a biomarker to assess the exposure to environmental tobacco smoke during childhood. The determination of these subst...

Background & objectives: The number of waterpipe cafes has considerably grown in Tehran and other cities of Iran. This increase has occurred due to a wrong belief that the use of hookahs is harmless and relatively safe. So, the aim of current study is to investigate the nicotine concentration in the indoor air of the waterpipe and cigarette cafés as well as the biological concentration of nicot...
متن کاملValidation of Self-Reported Smoking and Environmental Tobacco Smoke through Urine Cotinine in Prenatal Care Visits
Introduction: Cigarette smoking during pregnancy is the most significant modifiable risk factor for adverse fetal outcomes, such as low birth weight and premature birth. Efforts to obtain accurate estimate of smoking prevalence among pregnant woman have been hindered by high rates of misreporting. Cotinine is considered a gold standard measure of exposure to cigarette smoke, but its level in ur...

BACKGROUND There is a lack of data describing the exposure of Malaysian schoolchildren to Secondhand Smoke (SHS). The aim of this study is to identify factors influencing schoolchildren's exposures to SHS in Malaysia. METHOD This cross-sectional study was carried out to measure salivary cotinine concentrations among 1064 schoolchildren (10-11 years) attending 24 schools in Malaysia following ...
متن کاملMeasuring environmental tobacco smoke exposure in infants and young children through urine cotinine and memory-based parental reports: empirical findings and discussion.
OBJECTIVE This study examined the reliability and potential biases of two urine collection methods from which cotinine measures were obtained and the validity of memory-based parental reports of their children's exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). DESIGN Structured interviews were conducted with mothers of infants and young children to obtain memory-based estimates of recent ETS ex...
